VON is a not-for-profit charity, providing community-based health care and support services.
Position Title:
Volunteeer Visitor for "Good Beginnings" Parent-Infant support program
What you will do:
Volunteer visitors help parents and babies have Good Beginnings by offering support and encouragement through the promotion of healthy infant development, hands on assistance to provide a stimulating environment, assisting with infant care, and / or helping parents participate in recreational activities in the community.
Skills required:
Qualifications:
· Non-judgmental, trustworthy, patient, dependable, punctual
· Caring individual who enjoys babies / children
· Respectful of the privacy and feelings of others
· Excellent inter-personal skills, communication skills, and listening skills
· An understanding of parenting issues and children’s needs (or willingness to learn)
· Ability to work under the direct supervision of the parent
Requirements:
· 16 years and older (Parental Consent Form required for 16 / 17 year olds)
· Minimum commitment of 3 hours/week for 3 months plus training
· Current Police Records Search (VON supplies form, no charge for volunteer)
· 2 positive references
· Successful completion of the orientation and training session
Work Setting:
· The visits take place in the parent’s home
· The families have been carefully screened and volunteers will never be requested to work in an environment known to be unsafe
· The coordinators will make every attempt to match a volunteer with a family who lives within a reasonable distance from the volunteer’s home/place of employment
Responsibilities:
· Carry VON ID when in volunteering role
· Work with coordinator to understand and meet the family’s individual needs
· Assist parent with the care of the newborn(s) and siblings
· Provide and / or model early interactions with the child that will positively affect the child’s social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and language development
· Model democratic parenting skills (promote respect, encouragement, and attentiveness)
· Provide monthly updates with dates, hours and activities completed during visits
· Act in accordance with the image VON wishes to project in the community
Skills you will learn:
· Member of a dedicated and committed team serving the needs of the community
· Excellent volunteer appreciation & recognition
· Reference letter provided, upon request, after completion of a minimum of 40 hours
· Free training, educational workshops, and resources
Length of time required:
3 months - mininum of 3 hrs a week

In client's home around Peel Region (Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon, Malton, Bolton)
