  • Blood Donor Clinics in Brampton
Every minute of every day, someone in Canada needs blood. That someone could be a loved one, a friend, a co-worker – or even you.

In Canada, roughly 137,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year. We all know that cancer patients often need blood or blood products to survive their treatments.

The number of transplants has increased steadily from 16 per one million Canadians in 1981 to 59 per one million Canadians in 2000. This includes kidney, liver, pancreas, heart, lung and bowel transplants – all of which are lengthy procedures requiring significant amounts of blood.

The number of total hip replacements done in Canada during the same period increased by just under 20 per cent.

As you can see, the need for blood and blood products is rapidly rising—and we need to increase the percentage of eligible Canadians who donate blood.

  • Employers Invited to Participate in Job Fair at Brampton Library
Due to the overwhelming success of Brampton Library’s first-ever Job Fair held last spring, the Library is once again inviting employers to connect with potential employees by taking part in its second annual Job Fair.

As well, the promotion of job search seminars to be hosted on the second floor of the library is expected to draw an even larger crowd of potential employees for participating businesses.

In addition to promoting employment opportunities, registered employers can meet skilled and motivated people seeking employment and receive résumés on the spot. This event is a great vehicle to advertise current and future employment opportunities, and to access talented people interested in joining your team.

  • Mission Employable! Conference - Employers Invited to Participate
    Dear Employer,

Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, Peel District School Board, The Learning Partnership’s Passport to Prosperity program and the Carpenter’s Local 27 are partnering to host the 3rd annual Mission Employable! Conference to be held May 10 and 11 of 2006. Last year’s conference was a great success and as a result, this year’s event has expanded to two days involving both school boards and up to 600 participants!

    What is Mission Employable?
Mission Employable is aimed specifically at Grade 12 students entering the world of work this spring and summer. The primary purpose is to connect Grade 12 students with prospective employers.

Why would my company be interested in hiring a recent secondary school graduate?
Students who enter the workforce directly from secondary school statistically stay in their communities for most of their lives. They bring energy and enthusiasm to the workplace and will assist your company in developing a skilled workforce at a time when our demographics indicate an aging population.

Employers will have an opportunity to interview and hire entry-level employees and to provide recruitment and career information about their industry sector.

    Registration Information
There is a registration fee of $100 dollars for the two days, which will include breakfast and lunch each day, and one presentation table. In addition, we invite employers to help further celebrate this event by donating door prizes for the numerous draws that will be held throughout the conference. Kindly refer to the registration form below for further details.
For more information, please contact Michelle Ouellette, Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board at 905-890-0708, extension 24524 or check the web at http://w3.dpcdsb.org/missionemp

We eagerly look forward to your response and participation in this year’s Mission Employable! Conference.

    Sincerely,
    The Mission Employable! Committee

    Synopsis:

Stanley and Brenda Parker are driving about France on their vacation. When they find themselves in a village near the German border on the eve of a local festival, they consider themselves lucky on finding a hotel room. But this kind of luck, no one would want to endure for long.

In less than an hour - with Brenda absent - Stanley finds himself lowering an attractive girl from his room's window. Confusion turns to chaos with the arrival of Claude Philby, the girl's husband followed by the arrival of Claude's girlfriend, Simone.

By the second hour, almost everybody is in the wrong bed. Figures dressed as nuns and monks rush in and out. Seductions and confrontations run rampant. When the dust settles, a weary and dazed Stanley wishes they had spent their vacation at a nice, quiet English seaside resort.

  • Battalion Targets Attendance Record
    NEWS - Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006

BRAMPTON, Ont. - The Brampton Battalion is on the verge of setting a club attendance record for a second straight season.

The Battalion needs to attract 14,353 fans to its final five home dates of the Ontario Hockey League's regular season to surpass the record 89,465 who attended the 34 home games in 2004-05.

Presale numbers suggest the record will be set with the second-last home game, a March 16 date with the Kingston Frontenacs.

The Troops have drawn 75,113 to 29 home games this season, an average of 2,590 per game. That's 6.5 percent ahead of the total of 70,508 and average of 2,431 per game at the same stage last year.

Group sales have accounted for attendance of 19,589, or 26.1 percent of the total. Group sales are up 39.5 percent over last season's total of 14,043 at the same stage.

The Battalion drew 12,831 to four home games this month, an average of 3,208 per game, the second-best February average in club history after last year, when six February dates averaged 3,354.

A season-high crowd of 4,214 saw the Battalion beat the Ottawa 67's 6-4 Sunday. The previous top single-game attendance was 3,809 on Sept. 23 to see the Barrie Colts in the Troops' season opener.

Those two crowds rank sixth and ninth on the club's list of all-time regular-season attendances. The single-game record is the 4,835 who saw the London Knights on Feb. 17, 2005.

The Battalion hosts the Oshawa Generals at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the first home game in March. The regular season ends with a March 19 home game against the Belleville Bulls.

  • Bedfull of Foreigners
Two couples, a mistress, a monk, a hotel manager and a few nuns all end up in the same bed at one point or another in Peel Players’ latest comedy production, A Bedfull of Foreigners. Written by David Freeman and being adapted by director Bob Matthews - “It’s going to be two hours of funny situations in a mad-capped comedy,” said Matthews, who has directed many plays for PPP. “There’s plenty of crazy special effects like wall clanking leaking radiators in this fast paced humorous play.” Set in a moderately cheap hotel on the French and German border, the hotel is being run by an inept hotel manager named Heinz. An English couple, Brenda and Stanley, who are on a motor holiday, quickly discover they’ll be sharing their room with a couple named Helga and Claude, who are then joined by Claude’s girlfriend Simone.

Senior drivers are the fastest-growing age cluster on today’s roads. Drive Wise is sponsored, in part, by CARP. CARP believes that driver education and prevention will ensure the safety of seniors and preserve their right to drive. CARP also believes that with the growing number of older Canadians on today’s roads, there is an increasing validity and urgency for driver education.

  • International Women’s Day
Putting women and women’s rights to equality on the global agenda is the moving force behind International Women’s Day. The idea of a day for women, celebrated all over the world, began at the beginning of this century in America and Europe. The focus was the movement for women’s rights and achieving universal suffrage for women. International Women’s Day really took hold between 1913 and 1917 when women held rallies either to protest the war or to express solidarity with their sisters. In December 1977 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace.

Since those early years, much progress has been made for women in developed and developing countries alike: in many countries, provisions guaranteeing the enjoyment of human rights without discrimination on the basis of sex have been included in constitutions; legal literacy and other measures have been introduced to alert women to their rights and to ensure their access to those rights; the world community has identified violence against women as a clear violation of women’s rights; incorporating gender perspectives into regular programmes and policies has become a priority at the United Nations and in many member states.

Although much remains to be done to achieve full equality, the voices of women are being heard. March 8th provides an opportunity to pay tribute to the achievements of women and to highlight the needs and concerns of women on national, regional and global agendas.

Committee

  • International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21 March. On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, against the apartheid "pass laws". Proclaiming the Day in 1966, the General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.

Conference.

  • Mission Employable! Conference - Employers Invited to Particiapte
