A DAY AS MOM

Essay by ADEL A.. - St. Marguerite d’Youville

A DAY AS MOM: Inspired by the Film “FREAKY FRIDAY”

Changing into your parent’s body can be insane. You would never know what to do or how to behave. Some people may think it is cool to become their parent, but in reality it could be the most challenging task you would ever have to encounter and experience. Especially when you become the opposite sex!

Imagine being a woman and even more challenging, being a mother! First of all, I would be at least 2 inches shorter and weigh a little bit more. Maybe I could live with that, but I wouldn’t have a clue how to dress. Women have to wear so many undergarments and every piece of clothing has been carefully selected and fashionable. That in itself is a task. I don’t know how to clasp a bra and when I tried putting on panty-hose I stuck my finger in the material and ripped it all the way down.

Now that I’m dressed I have to worry about make up. I don’t have a clue about make up; therefore it was a disaster trying to put it on. Not only did I smear the lipstick onto my chin, but I also stabbed my eye with the mascara stick. When I walked out of the bedroom I looked like an over-decorated Christmas tree. My kids and husband tried not to laugh for fear of worsening my ever deteriorating mood.

I handled breakfast with ease and making school lunches was not a problem. However, driving was nerve-racking and certainly an adventure. My husband would not be pleased to see the state of the van after I’m done with it. Maybe I should just catch the bus! I had to call in sick at work because it would be impossible for me to pretend to be an Executive Assistant. Being at home entailed housework, laundry, cooking and grocery shopping. How does mom do it? It would take me all week to accomplish. The temptation to switch on the television or turn on the Gamecube was overwhelming, but that would give away my imposter act. The best part is that I haven’t even gone through half a day of being a mother and I am already frustrated and exhausted.

I have a whole new respect and appreciation for my mother. It isn’t “cool” and certainly not easy to be a parent. In reality there are many hardships a parent has to face because being a parent is the most difficult task in the world and definitely one I am not ready for! I also realized a mother’s work is never done and is rarely given the appreciation she deserves.
